In 1995 Derek Wilton was the proud owner of two garden gnomes, Arthur and Guinevere, but was mystified when Arthur went missing and sent him postcards from his travels. Derek was then sent a severed gnome's ear along with a ransom note for fifty chocolate coins. He lay in wait for the culprit but was arrested by the police on suspicion of being a peeping Tom.
On the night before his marriage to Angela Hawthorne, Norris Cole confessed to his best man that he was the "gnome thief". In revenge, Derek drove him to the wrong church, making him late for the wedding where he had to face the fury of Angela.
