Coronation Street was first broadcast on 9th December 1960 as a pilot episode by a reluctant ITV (Britain's Independent Television network). It was a Canadian, working in the UK, who was instrumental in getting the show to air. Since then Coronation Street has enjoyed an unbroken run of over 50 years and has become the world's longest running soap.
